second note is tied, not the first note.  A tied note is merely time added to
the preceding.  It is not played again.  A dotted note is an abbreviation for
tied note which has half the time value of the preceding, so a dotted half is
a quarter tied to a preceding half.  Originally, the dot was where the tied
note would have been, like o  . * * instead of, today o.   * * ||
